Combustion Air Vents for Fireplaces & Stoves

Ensure Proper Draft, Safety & Burn Efficiency in Your Home

What Is a Combustion Air Vent?

Combustion air vents (or outside air kits) provide a dedicated source of fresh air to your fireplace or stove. Fire needs oxygen to burn — without a proper air supply, fireplaces can backdraft, perform poorly, or pull dangerous gases into your home.

These vents help ensure your appliance burns safely and efficiently by pulling in air from outside, not from your already-heated indoor air.

Combustion Air Vents

Does your chimney ever have issues with smoke coming back into the home after the fire has been running for a while? The newer your home is the more your fireplace has to compete with other air sources for air for combustion. In addition to this new homes are tighter and let in less draft than older homes which can cause the fireplace to run our of combustion air and stop drafting. You can also experience this is you have an older home and you do something that changes the airflow in the home. Newer tighter windows, doors, or insulation can restrict the amount of airflow for the fireplace. When this occurs a combustion air vent is the proper solution to the  fireplace a fresh air source to pull from the outside air.

One additional benefit of the combustion air vent is not only does the fireplace draft better it also heats better. When the fireplace is pulling air towards the fireplace but also trying to push heat out the heat waves and air movement can interfere with each other. This leads to the heat bouncing back and fourth. If it pull air from the outside the fireplace pull the air forward from the rear of the fireplace and then pushes the heat out. The air and heat waves are moving in the same direction instead of opposing. There is a damper on the air vent so you can close it when not in use. A pilot hole is drilled from the firebox to the outside of the home. Then a hole saw is used to make a perfect round hole from one side to the other. There is a cover on the outside to keep any water or animals out of the fireplace.

Why Install a Combustion Air Vent?

Better combustion = hotter, more efficient fire

Prevents fireplace smoke from entering your living space

Reduces drafts and pressure issues in tightly sealed homes

Improves safety and prevents carbon monoxide risks

Essential for newer homes or energy-efficient construction

Signs You May Need a Combustion Air Supply

  • Your fire burns poorly or struggles to stay lit

  • Smoke enters the room when you use your fireplace

  • You’ve recently upgraded windows or sealed your home

  • You're installing a new wood stove or fireplace insert

If your home is tightly sealed (common in Northern VA), the fireplace may be starved of oxygen, causing poor performance and safety issues.

FAQs About Combustion Air Vents

Can’t my fireplace just pull air from the room?

Yes, but in many homes this causes drafts, smoke issues, or air pressure problems. Outside air supply creates better conditions for burning.

Is this required by code?

For certain inserts and stoves, yes — especially EPA-certified models. We ensure your setup meets local Northern VA building codes.

Will this increase my heating bills?

No. In fact, supplying outdoor combustion air reduces the loss of your indoor heated air, improving energy efficiency.

We’re proud members of the Mid-Atlantic Chimney Association, CSIA-certified, and carry full liability and workers’ compensation insurance. We believe in giving back—supporting local events, hiring local, and delivering dependable service to our neighbors.
