What Is a Chimney Cap and Why Is It So Important?

A chimney cap is a protective metal cover that fits over the top of your flue. It’s one of the most affordable and essential upgrades you can make to protect your chimney and home.

Without a cap, your chimney is exposed to:

- Rain and snow (leading to moisture damage)

- Birds, squirrels, and nesting animals

- Leaves, sticks, and debris buildup

- Flying embers that could ignite your roof

Chimney caps are required by most local codes and home insurance policies. If your chimney is open, damaged, or rusted — it’s time for a replacement.

Chimney Caps

There are three different styles of chimney caps they are traditional (single flue), multiflue (Hinged) and multi flue hip and ridge skirted. All three styles provide different coverage and offer different benefits. A chimney cap in general will prevent water or animals from entering the chimney. They can also range in pricing depending on size. A chimney cap can prevent water from entering the flue damaging it over time.

Types of Chimney Caps:

  • Traditional (singles flue) chimney cap:  Traditional chimney caps bolt on to the existing flue. In order for them to be installed the flue tile has to extend about 2 inches to properly mount. The other flue tiles must also not be too each other or the cap lids with touch and sent water down one flue from another. This chimney cap will prevent water and animal entry.  They cover only the individual flue and do not provide any coverage over the entire top of the chimney. The primary benefit of this option is cost is lower than other styles.

  • Multiflue (Hinged) Cap: This style cap is inbetween the traditional and the hip and ridge skirted. This provides more coverage than a traditional but less than a hip and ridge skirted cap. This style chimney cap is bolted to the existing chimney crown. In order to install this tyle the chimney crown must be in good condition or the bolts will not hold. These caps cost between the two styles. They can provide good coverage of the top of the chimney however they do not cover the entire top.

  • Hip & Ridge Skirted Multiflue Chimney cap: This style cap provides the most coverage of all three styles. This chimney cap is bolted to the top row of bricks. In order for this style to work the top row of bricks must be in good condition. This chimney cap will actually overhang the top of the chimney by at least 2.5 inches per size and can be customized to offer a larger overhang if desired. This chimney cap also contains a skirt with drip edge so none of the top of the chimney gets wet at all. This is the best chimney cap that can be installed and provides the most coverage. The only downside is it is also the most expensive. If you will be in the home long term this option makes sense, however if you will not there may be cheaper options. This also offers the most pleasing aesthetics.

All chimney caps can be powder coating if you prefer them a certain color. I will attach pictures of all the standard colors. Cost is $200-400 to powder coat. If you go with white it has to be done twice and cost double the standard price. Also attach a picture of hip and ridge in black.
