Chimney Crown Repair & Replacement Services

Why Your Chimney Crown Matters

The chimney crown is your chimney’s first line of defense against the elements. Located at the very top of your masonry chimney, the crown is a sloped concrete surface that seals the top and sheds water away from the flue and bricks. When damaged or missing, rainwater seeps in—leading to costly water damage, crumbling bricks, and interior leaks.

At Chim-Chim Churee, we specialize in custom chimney crown repair and replacement for homes across Manassas and Northern Virginia. Our crowns are built to last, meeting IRC building code and using fiber-reinforced concrete for maximum durability and water resistance.

Standard Chimney Crown

Replacement is done by removing the existing crown first. In order to remove the old crown typically we have to score (cut) the concrete with a saw to prevent the brick from being damaged. This is done by making multiple cuts in a grid pattern on the concrete and where the concrete meets the bricks. Concrete is stronger than mortar/brick and so we score the concrete to prevent damage to the brick/mortar. After the chimney crown is demoed we will baste it with water since there will be dust on the surface to ensure we get a proper bond. The concrete used is fiber reinforced to prevent cracking. The crown is applied approx. 4 inches thick in the center sloping from the center to the corners.

ASTM Crown with Overhang

This crown method follows the exact same process for removal as a standard crown. See above for process. The primary difference between the two is that this crown has multiple other measure to prevent failure over time. It also is like having a hat over your chimney. This will prevent the masonry from below the crown from getting wet adding significant life to the chimney. It is similar to how your roof and gutters overhang the front of your home. The more water you keep away from the chimney the longer it will last. Before the concrete is applied we will apply a bond breaker around the flue tile to prevent cracking from thermal expansion when the flue tile inside the crown expands with use. Forms will be installed in place around the top chimney for the concete. After the forms are set and the  Attach pictures of chimney crown with overhang.

FAQs About Chimney Crowns

Can I use mortar to repair a chimney crown myself?

No. Mortar is not waterproof and will crack quickly. Chimney crowns require specific materials like fiber-reinforced concrete to meet code and last.

Is a crown different from a chimney cap?

Yes. The crown is the concrete slab at the top of the masonry structure, while the chimney cap is a metal cover that keeps out rain and animals.

How often should my crown be inspected?

We recommend inspecting it every 2–3 years, or after any storm, ice, or visible masonry damage.

We’re proud members of the Mid-Atlantic Chimney Association, CSIA-certified, and carry full liability and workers’ compensation insurance. We believe in giving back—supporting local events, hiring local, and delivering dependable service to our neighbors.
